MAGNIFICA 70 is set on the city of São Paulo in the 1970s and depicts a universal and timeless situation - the clash between desire for the forbidden, longing and repression, freedom and prejudice.
The story takes place in the infamous district of “Bairro da Luz”, which was home at the time to the cinema industry, also known as “Boca de Lixo” (Garbage Mouth). For more than a decade within the corners of this district a new independent cinema started it’s flourishing life, producing a variety of films, but most notably erotic. The central story, which has a number of subplots, involves the history of Vicente, a 35-year old “paulistano” who lives a safe but repressed middle-class life. He works as a censor in the Federal film censorship office and has a routine marriage to Isabel, daughter of General Souto.
He spends his life writing reports, giving legal opinions and attending film sessions. When he sees the film “A Devassa da Estudante” (The Hot Student), he gets to know Dora Dumar and is bowled over. His fascination with her takes him to the red light district where he begins to work with Dora and Manolo, owner of the Magnífica film company. This seductive but chaotic world draws all three together in an obsessive triangle.Read More
