Lila and Elena, now sixteen, feel they entered a dead end. By assuming her husband's last name, Lila has the impression of having lost her identity. Elena is now a model student but, during her friend's wedding banquet, she discovers that she can't feel well in her neighborhood or outside of her. During a holiday in Ischia, the two friends meet again with Nino Sarratore, a childhood acquaintance who is now a talented university student. The meeting will forever change the nature of their bond, projecting the two friends to two completely different worlds: Lila becomes a skilled saleswoman in the elegant shoe store of the powerful Solara family, in the center of Naples; Elena, however, remains stubborn with her studies and is willing to leave and study at the university in Pisa.
