Miami, May 30, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced the premiere of the groundbreaking multi-part documentary series The Weight of the Nation, with Parts 1 & 2 debuting June 4th and Parts 3 & 4 on June 5th. The documentary sheds light on the obesity epidemic that is affecting the United Estates and the rest of the world, and highlights the societal transformations that must take place in order to slow, arrest and eventually reverse the prevalence of obesity.

The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing health issues facing the nation today. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults age 20 and over are overweight or obese, while nearly one-third of the nation’s children and adolescents age two to 19 are overweight or obese. Obesity contributes to five of the ten leading causes of death in the U.S., including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke and kidney disease.

An unprecedented collaboration of HBO and the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), The Weight of the Nation takes an unflinching look at the severity of the crisis and its crippling effects on the nation’s health care system. The program was developed in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

The U.S. collective weight has risen dramatically since the 1980s, with adult obesity rates more than doubling. All Americans pay the price in one way or another, from higher insurance premiums and lost productivity, to higher taxes and unemployment.

The Weight of the Nation kicks off with CONSEQUENCES (Part 1) and CHOICES (Part 2) on June 4th, followed by CHILDREN IN CRISIS (Part 3) and CHALLENGES (Part 4) on June 5th
